16-year-old arrested; deliberate shooting with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass school capturing that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division said in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful system supplies and threatening to commit a criminal offense which will lead to loss of life or great bodily injury.

Police mentioned they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a capturing that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teenager was a student at Berkeley High School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they discovered components to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and digital objects that could possibly be used to create further weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"College safety remains a high precedence for the division," police said in a press release. 

Details on whom the teenager was trying to recruit weren't disclosed. Police mentioned this case remains under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens advised the school's neighborhood that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon elements, the district relied on police experience to evaluate any potential ongoing threat to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the coed's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this period, we alerted our administrative and security workers about this investigation and, as is our normal practice, maintained close contact with our BPD School Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley High College campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation interval, we have been assured that this individual did not pose a right away menace to the Berkeley High Faculty community."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary action towards the student. 

In addition, a town hall meeting titled: 'The right way to Talk to Youngsters About Faculty Violence' offered by Alameda County Office of Training is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
