Father or mother with concealed weapon accidentally shoots self while at Arlington ISD faculty, police say

Arlington police said Duff Elementary School was placed on lockdown for a time Thursday after a parent with a concealed weapon had his gun unintentionally go off, hitting the parent within the leg.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police stated Duff Elementary School was positioned on lockdown for a time Thursday after a father or mother with a concealed weapon had his gun accidentally go off, hitting the guardian in the leg.

The varsity had early release and college students have been launched at the planned time of 12:10 p.m.

According to police, the dad or mum, identified as 55-year-old Anthony White, dropped his gun and accidentally shot himself. His harm was not serious.

The school district said White was inside the constructing, close to the foyer area, and not within the hallway near college students when the gun went off.

Police and faculty officers said there was no threat made and the dad or mum didn't have "malicious intent."

No college students or employees have been injured. The guardian was taken to an area hospital after being shot within the leg. 

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones mentioned after White was launched from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in prohibited places and discharge of a firearm in sure municipalities.

In the two days since the Uvalde mass college shooting, there have been 5 instances in North Texas related to guns brought to colleges or threats made.

Arlington dad and mom mentioned their minds immediately considered the worst once they were notified.

No mum or dad ever wants there to be a motive for them to get a textual content message saying their kid's college is on lockdown.

But since this week's lethal taking pictures at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, they can't help however think the worst when they do.

"When I obtained the textual content message, I used to be like, ‘Oh my God, something goes to occur.’ I was shocked," guardian Karima Rasheed said.

While most times, lockdowns are solely drills college students have to take part in, Rasheed's son, Rami, said that knowing what happened earlier this week made this lockdown totally different. 

"I began seeing my classmates starting to cry and our trainer received a notification on their phone saying somebody was within the building," he stated.

Weapons aren't allowed on faculty property, and parents FOX 4 spoke with said even when it was a mistake, the timing is just terrible.

"What are we going to do? They need to go to highschool, and obviously, statistically, it's unlikely to occur, however you by no means wish to be the one statistic. What if it is your children?" Matthew Mitchell stated.

Mitchell lives throughout the street from Duff Elementary. His daughters go to another Arlington college. 

"I’m terrified, completely terrified. I’ve obtained twin six-year-olds that go to a distinct Arlington college and each time I hear there's a lockdown or a faculty capturing, my heart jumps into my throat," he said.

Rasheed stated Thursday was the commencement day for sixth grade students at Duff Elementary.

While driving her son to school in the morning, she had a talk with him about Uvalde and what to do if something ever occurred at his college.

"If something happened, you’ve obtained to run anywhere that’s secure and conceal," she advised her little one.

Whereas some say the incident in Uvalde is simply too contemporary to speak politics, Mitchell said one thing must be executed now. 

"They wish to talk about it, they wish to campaign on it, they want to fundraiser on it, however they don’t want to truly cross any laws and do something," he added.
