SACRAMENTO, Calif. >> A suspect on the run since a mass taking pictures left six folks dead during an alleged gang dispute in California’s capital city final month has been arrested in Las Vegas, authorities said.
Investigators consider Mtula Payton was one of many alleged gang members who opened fireplace in downtown Sacramento on April 3. He was taken into custody at an apartment complex, the Sacramento Police Department said in a press release Saturday evening.
“Las Vegas Metro Police Department labored with our detectives for weeks in an effort to find Payton,” the statement mentioned.
It wasn’t identified Sunday if Payton has an lawyer who may communicate on his behalf.
Payton and two others, brothers Smiley Martin and Dandrae Martin, have been charged this month with homicide in the slayings, in addition to weapons offenses.
Investigators offered no motive however mentioned in court docket paperwork that Smiley Martin and his companions recorded an internet video hours before the capturing, flashing weapons and speaking trash from a location in rival gang territory. In it, they state their plans to move to the downtown space with the intent of opening fireplace.
Three men alleged to be gang members and three ladies who were innocent bystanders died within the shootout that occurred as patrons of bars and nightclubs emptied out onto downtown streets. A dozen more folks have been wounded.
The Martin brothers, who were among the many wounded, remain jailed. Attorneys for the brothers have but to comment on their charging.
Payton, who police say is a member of a rival gang, was being held in a Nevada jail pending transport back to California.
