Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech giant mentioned its iconic music player has been changed by other gadgets, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising, said: "Immediately, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have integrated an unimaginable music expertise throughout all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with assist for spatial audio - there isn't any higher approach to take pleasure in, discover, and experience music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the first MP3 participant that might maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a complete new class of digital music player that allows you to put your complete music collection in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he said on the time.

"With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again."

Comparable MP3 gamers launched by Microsoft and Sony did not have the same success as the iPod.

Apple has released five versions of its music player - the Basic, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The company has been slowly killing its iPod vary lately, with mobile phone expertise enabling prospects to hearken to music services on their telephones.

In 2014, the basic click wheel mannequin was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano have been killed off three years later.
