16-year-old arrested; planned taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass faculty taking pictures that would have included a bombing at Berkeley High Faculty, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division said in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging device materials and threatening to commit against the law which is able to lead to demise or great bodily injury.

Police mentioned they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a pupil at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they discovered components to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital items that could be used to create additional weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"Faculty safety remains a high precedence for the department," police said in an announcement. 

Details on whom the teen was attempting to recruit weren't disclosed. Police stated this case stays below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens advised the school's group that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon components, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing risk to its schools. The district communicated with police on the coed's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this period, we alerted our administrative and security staff about this investigation and, as is our standard apply, maintained close contact with our BPD College Resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive School campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation period, we have been assured that this individual did not pose a right away risk to the Berkeley Excessive School neighborhood."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary motion against the scholar. 

In addition, a town corridor meeting titled: 'Tips on how to Talk to Youngsters About Faculty Violence' offered by Alameda County Workplace of Training is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
