16-year-old arrested; planned shooting with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass college capturing that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive Faculty, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department said in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful system supplies and threatening to commit a crime which will lead to demise or great bodily harm.

Police mentioned they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teen was a pupil at Berkeley High School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they found components to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and electronic items that could be used to create extra weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"College security remains a excessive priority for the department," police mentioned in a statement. 

Particulars on whom the teen was making an attempt to recruit weren't disclosed. Police stated this case remains beneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the school's group that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon elements, the district relied on police experience to evaluate any potential ongoing danger to its colleges. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this era, we alerted our administrative and security workers about this investigation and, as is our customary practice, maintained shut contact with our BPD School Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive School campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation interval, we were assured that this particular person did not pose an instantaneous threat to the Berkeley Excessive Faculty community."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary action against the student. 

In addition, a city corridor meeting titled: 'How one can Discuss to Children About School Violence' provided by Alameda County Office of Education is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
