16-year-old arrested; planned capturing with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass school taking pictures that could have included a bombing at Berkeley High Faculty, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division said in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful gadget materials and threatening to commit a criminal offense which can end in dying or great bodily injury.

Police stated they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a student at Berkeley High Faculty.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they discovered parts to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and electronic objects that could possibly be used to create further weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"School security stays a high priority for the division," police said in an announcement. 

Details on whom the teen was making an attempt to recruit were not disclosed. Police stated this case remains underneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens advised the varsity's neighborhood that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing threat to its schools. The district communicated with police on the coed's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this era, we alerted our administrative and safety workers about this investigation and, as is our normal follow, maintained shut contact with our BPD Faculty Resource Officer on the Berkeley High Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation period, we had been assured that this particular person did not pose a right away risk to the Berkeley High College community."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary action towards the coed.
