16-year-old arrested; deliberate taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass school capturing that would have included a bombing at Berkeley High College, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department stated in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging system supplies and threatening to commit a criminal offense which can result in death or great bodily harm.

Police said they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a scholar at Berkeley Excessive College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they found parts to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and digital gadgets that could be used to create additional weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"Faculty security stays a high priority for the department," police mentioned in an announcement. 

Details on whom the teenager was trying to recruit were not disclosed. Police said this case remains under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the college's community that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police expertise to assess any potential ongoing threat to its schools. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and security staff about this investigation and, as is our customary apply, maintained close contact with our BPD School Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley High School campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation interval, we had been assured that this particular person did not pose a direct menace to the Berkeley Excessive College community."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary action in opposition to the scholar.
